APBF Lubricants Project Releases 2004 Summary Report
The Advanced Petroleum Based Fuels Lubricants project has released a report that describes the project's work during the 2004 fiscal year. The report discusses the results of the first phase of the lubricants study—Phase 1—investigating the impact of lubricant formulation on engine-out emissions.
Lubricants from diesel engines are known to be consumed in small quantities during the normal operation of the engine. While the quantities may be small, the sulfur content in engine oil is typically higher than the sulfur in fuel by an order of magnitude or more. Because sulfur levels in lubricants could have a negative impact on the durability of catalysts and other emissions effects, it is important that we quantify and evaluate the effect of lubricants on emissions. The results of the APBF-DEC lubricants project will provide valuable information that will allow researchers to develop lubricants that will meet the performance and emissions standards of future engines.
