Hydrogen Technologies and Systems Center

NREL's Hydrogen Technologies & Systems Center (HTSC) is helping to facilitate the transition to a new energy future—a future built on diverse and abundant renewable resources and integrated renewable-hydrogen production systems.

Leading these crosscutting efforts, the center's activities contribute to advances across the laboratory—in photovoltaics, bioenergy, transportation, wind, buildings, and basic sciences. HTSC leads NREL's hydrogen and fuel cell R&D activities through its Hydrogen Technologies Group and its Hydrogen Analysis Group.

Hydrogen Technologies Group

The Hydrogen Technologies Group (PDF 294 KB) supports DOE's Hydrogen, Fuel Cells & Infrastructure Technologies Program by coordinating and integrating NREL's hydrogen research activities. Download Adobe Reader.

The Hydrogen Technologies Group is supporting the transition to a hydrogen energy future by contributing to several key research areas, including:

  • Production — Producing hydrogen from renewable energy sources such as biomass, solar, and wind using both chemical and electrochemical conversion technologies.
  • Fuel Cells — Improving materials and developing cost effective manufacturing methods.
  • Codes and standards — Establishing a market-receptive environment for commercializing hydrogen-based products and systems by ensuring the safety of hydrogen in storage and transport.

Group Manager (Acting): Robert Remick

Hydrogen Analysis Group

The Hydrogen Analysis Group (PDF 314 KB) supports DOE's Hydrogen program by working with government agencies, industry, communities, and other national labs to implement the National Hydrogen Energy Vision for America. Download Adobe Reader.

The Hydrogen Analysis Group is supporting the transition to a hydrogen energy future by contributing in several areas of analysis including:

  • Infrastructure Analysis — Provide direction, focus, and support for the development and introduction of hydrogen by evaluating technical, economic, environmental, and integration aspects of hydrogen systems.
  • Technology Validation — Confirming that component technical targets for a given technology have been achieved and that system performance and operation targets are being met under realistic conditions.
  • Education — Develop projects to advance outreach and public education activities related to hydrogen.
