European Commission Announces First Commercial Solar Plant

April 3, 2007

The European Commission announced the opening of Europe's first commercial-scale concentrating solar power plant in Seville, Spain.

The 11-megawatt plant, known as the PS10 project, uses power tower system technology with 624 heliostats.  According to the Environmental News Service, it produces enough energy for 10,000 people while preventing about 16,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
